Serenity Prayer Redux

I'll let ya in on a little secret...some of my best moments of clarity and introspect happen in the shower. May sound weird, but I think it's the lack of distractions. The other day, the second line of The Serenity Prayer written by Reinhold Niebuhr popped in my mind. Some categorize this as a prayer for rough times, but it applies to daily life in my opinion. Then I started thinking it wouldn't hurt to engage creative license by personalizing it to fit my thoughts and outlook on life (my additions are in brackets). I encourage you to consider doing the same with a work that inspires you.

~~ ~~ ~~

God grant me the serenity
to accept {and fully understand} the things {and people} I cannot change;
courage to change the {truly important} things I can;
and wisdom to know {and respect} the difference.

Living one day at a time {but not become complacent};
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting {and learning from} hardships as the pathway to {a heart of love and true} peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to {and believe in} His Will;
That I may be reasonably {wise, humble, loving,
forgiving and}
happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him {including the peace that surpasses all understanding}
Forever in the next.

Amen.

This is possibly one of the most necessary prayers ever written or uttered in our lifetime. It speaks to being human in all too human world. I'm starting a fast tmw, & methinks I best put this prayer to good use.

Also like your own lil additions to it. *smiles*

SJ!

One.

Great, Lin! I just had a convo about the revelations that only a fast can produce. All the best!

I've heard that prayer in other places in other times. Its great to see that some actually listen to the words and try to live by them. Imo, prayers are best when the person actually believes they will come true.

Yep, Carey, ya gotta have the faith in place.

I think about so many things in the shower. I think it's something about the water "showering" down on you. This is one of my favorite prayers and your words only made it better.

It's got to be the running water. Showers, washing dishes, rivers, etc...it's powerful!

I enjoyed my visit to your blog and love the personalized serenity prayer! Bless you for blessing me!
